Another green boondoggle goes bust

"An energy expert on the news this morning said it is indeed possible that gasoline could top $4.75 or even $5.00 a gallon by midsummer if this nonsense continues. That is not good. Gas right now should be in the $2.50 range. Gasoline will be so high in cost that the clueless 'greenies' will be clamoring for more wind and solar. Tell you what - they can have Ivanpah. All they need do is find a way to dispose of it once they are done playing with it."

In 2008, then President Obama thought it would be wise to help out our "energy crisis" by building (with taxpayer dollars) a huge solar plant (Ivanpah) in the middle of the Mohave Desert. I mean, why not? Plenty of sunshine, very little rain, this thing could produce enough free energy from the sun to make southern California glow. Except for one thing. It was not free - it cost the taxpayers $2.2 Billion. And it was not efficient - it never lived up to its promises. And now it is shut down, and California is left with another big scar on its land.

This thing has been a real bust. If not for the legacy of Obamacare, the "Unaffordable Care Act", the Ivanpah solar plant could have been his legacy instead. Besides killing an estimated 6,000 birds a year, it also was a power drain instead of a power source. And now, to make matters worse, much of the material used is not recyclable. The excuse, "it all sounded like a good idea at the time" - just does not cut it.

I still believe that at some time in the future, solar will have a part in our energy picture. Wind - probably not. The real bonanza that many scientists are now talking about is all the power in tidal. That is where part of our future might be found. But to sink billions into this science project in California with an immature technology, was another one of the Obama era fool's errands.

Anybody who thinks that our world long longer is dependent on oil, need only look to the Strait of Hormuz right now. With a good portion of the world's oil bottled up by Iran, much of the world is short on oil and fertilizer. Soon, this too shall pass, and oil will flow freely in the oceans again. But for right now, the one reliable energy source we have, is becoming very expensive (if you can get it).
