The Chicken Hawk

"I guess the term 'in it to win it' has become obsolete with this crew we now have..."

In politics, the term Chicken hawk  is a used to describe a person who strongly supports military action, yet who actively avoided military service when of age. Or we can take that one step further. It could also mean a person who actively spoke out against war and our military until he (or she) became the Commander in Chief. Have we seen that lately? As we say in Minnesota, "you betcha"!

May I first start with my favorite Chicken hawk of all time, William Jefferson Blythe Clinton? Who could ever forget the famous line when the draft board came a knocking on Slick Willie's door. He was sorry, but could not serve because he "loathed the military". Huh? That was our Commander in Chief for eight long years. That was the Commander in Chief when Al Qaeda really started to feel their oats and planned the 9/11 attacks. That was the Commander in Chief who liked to bomb Bosnia from 10,000 feet and ignored the carnage going on in Rwanda. After all, this was the time of the "blue dress". When he left office, he left the world a mess for the next Commander in Chief.

However, the current Commander in Chief might even surpass Slick Willie for the Chicken Hawk title. NEVER a fan of the military before he was sworn into office, he is now showing his true colors. Thank goodness he had at least one truth teller in his very left leaning Cabinet. Robert Gates has a new book out, and it is suppose to be a "doosie". Mr. Gates not only drops a dime on his old boss, but the also the VP. In it Mr. Gates shows the real heart of the Commander in Chief. And it ain't a heart for the military.

So here we are, on the threshold of losing Iraq to the bad guys, and the head guy could not give a rip.  Al Qaeda is not the enemy. They never have been. The ENEMY is within. It is the Republicans, the Tea Party, the oil companies, and the dreaded 1%. The President came back from Hawaii all rested and relaxed and ready for battle - with the Republicans. Never mind the Middle East is dissolving right before our eyes. No, this President thinks the military should just be a few drones and that is it. The rest we don't need. In the world of equal outcomes, it is not fair that our military should be superior to others.

Here we sit going into 2014, and nobody is really in charge of our ship of state. The Secretary of State is working on - global warming issues with other countries. The Secretary of Defense is working to get us out of Afghanistan ASAP so that country can end up just like Iraq is.  And the Commander in Chief? Well, his back swing really improved during his time on the islands, so look for better golf scores when the weather improves at Camp David.

As for the rest of us, we have a front row seat to the demise of our once great nation. A nation which engendered respect as well as fear (when needed) on a world stage. Now the roaring Lion of freedom is becoming no more than a paper tiger.
