Apple's biggest gamble?

"We are at the cusp of one of the biggest technological revolutions in the history of mankind. Why? It won't just be cars. Autonomous will also apply to trucks, buses, trains, ships, jet airplanes, and yes - even rocket ships."

Okay - so you are successful. And you are now worth a trillion dollars. So what? Better yet, now what? Was not the i Phone, the i Pad, and the new Apple Watch enough for you? No? So, now you want to bet part of the farm on a ---- car. The Apple Car to be exact. It will be part of this ever growing fleet of autonomous cars which will hitting the marketplace on or before 2025. Or will it?

The Apple Car has been kicking around for some time now. On again and off again. Well, not all of it. At the least, Tim Cook said he wanted Apple to develop the brains for an autonomous car. Who would build the car, is anyone's guess. As Cook said, "Apple will make a kick butt AI for the brains of this new car". Or, Apple might not job this out. They might build the entire car themselves. Still being kicked around the boardroom.

Don't think for a minute that Apple has not taken note of the trials and tribulations that Tesla is going through right now. Speaking of which, Apple recently hired a senior engineering exec from Tesla. Just in case they decide to build the entire car. And if Apple does build it, based on other products they have produced in the past, we know it will be two things - good and expensive.

I have some social media friends who think every time I publish an article on the autonomous (driver-less) car revolution, it am writing about science fiction. Why? Like many of us (me included), we like to drive our own cars. The thought of having some "Alexa" type of AI drive our cars for us is a bridge too far.

Someone asked a few months ago why I am so fascinated by driver-less cars. For one reason - we are at the cusp of one of the biggest technological revolutions in the history of mankind. Why? It won't just be cars. Autonomous will also apply to trucks, buses, trains, ships, jet airplanes, and yes - even rocket ships. We are going to subcontract out the brains for whatever transports us to the wild and wacky world of AI.

What will be the next perch for Apple once the Apple Car is up and running. Heaven only knows. Maybe  a total AI house. Let that one sink in for a while...
