An easy immigration fix

"Until the illegals start to vote Republican, this issue will continue to be part of our great divide."

This past weekend, we had the pleasure to spend some time with our Congressman and his lovely wife. We talked a lot of family stuff, plus a bit of politics. One of the topics which came up was immigration. How this has turned into a sticky wicket with the continuation of funding for the government. On the way home, I thought about our talk. When did immigration become such a divisive issue in our country? After all, we have had immigration for years.

The answer really, is quite simple. It is when we had to put the word "illegal" in front of immigration. With legal immigration our system works just fine, thank you. That is with one caveat. We might need to expand our I-9 Visa program to accommodate more high skilled workers. The kinds of workers we cannot produce quickly enough to meet the demands of our exploding economy.

But then we have the 10 million or so illegals floating around. Most are not high skilled. In fact, many have limited skills and unlimited needs. Democrats on one hand, want to grant all these folks blanket amnesty. And keep the "chain migration" going at top speed. Why would they want this, instead of a orderly system of legal migration? One word which we all know - votes.

What would be an instant fix for this problem? Have the illegal immigrants decide it is better to vote Republican than Democrat. The Democrats would drop them like hot potatoes. The Democrats would be clamoring for more ICE resources, a 90 foot wall on our southern border, and stricter prison sentencing for trying to sneak into this country.

The DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) is going to be fixed. That is a given. It will be fixed before March. Why? First off, these kids are innocent. They had no choice in the path their parents took. Second, which politician wants to vote against innocent children? None that I know.

Chain migration on the other hand, should be killed. Same with lottery visas. Bad policies, bad results. And build the damn wall for crying out loud! If the Democrats want to shut down the government over the wall, chain migration and lottery visas, let them. Once the government is shut down, we will see if anyone (save the lap dog media), notices.

Until the illegals start to vote Republican, this issue will continue to be part of our great divide. And because of stubborn archaic politics and policies, I don't see a near term fix for this - not even a little bit.

  1. Mexican immigrants were increasingly voting GOP (2-3 percent increase per election cycle) until 45 declared war on them, calling them rapists, building a wall, etc. And now he is ordering 200k Salvadorans to leave. Someone should tell him who is staffing his hotels and resort properties.
Now the GOP will not get back this groups vote for many decades.
I9 visa workers will not continue to staff our tech industries in sufficient numbers if their families are not allowed to come.

Enjoy the warmup, wash the car, etc.

  2. There are simple solutions, but they all start with recognition of that one word "illegal." Start with DACA or the "Dreamers." I say it is a good idea, that those kids who are here in "the only country they've ever known" should be allowed to stay, with a couple of conditions. First, you had to arrive before age 5, you have no brushes with the law until age 18, you stay in school, find a job or join the military, and you apply for citizenship. Until then, your parents can stay IF they find a job, learn English, pay their fines or whatever and apply for a green card. If not, when you turn 18 they go home. Everybody else-- those 5-16, unaccompanied, MS-13s, etc., you're out on the next bus.

Now, for the adults: First, mandatory "e-verify" for all new employees, and heavy fines for hiring an illegal. Second, Social Security admin notifies ICE of all 10 million known illegal aliens, by name and employer; and every one of them receives a letter giving them one year. Meanwhile, we create some sort of "guest worker" program, details TBD, AND we temporarily add to the quota for everybody who comes in knowing where there is a job waiting, speaks passable English, has no known criminal record and is willing to be tracked as a "guest worker." Call it "wink-wink" amnesty. We don't care what that other guy with your same name that worked where you say there is a job, unless he had a criminal record. The "wall" would get built, and illegal immigration would stop.

  4. Sorry, I forgot the ":-)" But do you not wonder why such simple and obvious solutions never see the light in DC?

  6. Sweden’s economy has surged over the past years, helped by a record inflow of migrants, all-time low interest rates and a recovering global economy.

  7. 45 contradicts self repeatedly in immigration meeting.
When will the mental health evaluation be scheduled?

  8. So, thinking through both sides of an issue is a sign of mental illness? or only when Trump does it?

Isn't allowing open borders, as Democrats seem to insist, much more a sign of mental illness?

  9. All he wants is something to sign, It will be as weak as tax REFORM and he won't read it or know what's in it! CR on immigration with Phase 2 coming someday!

  10. That Trump is Mr. Slick. "What they send him" with a Republican House and Republican Senate will give him everything he wants, with the possibility that the Democrats will be forced to sign on because he listened to them, and would otherwise be seen as unreasonable.

Weak as tax reform? Wow! Maybe a few thousand dollars less in taxes doesn't mean much to you, but to a lot of us that is way past "weak." Are you suggesting Trump is deranged, or just worried that he is not?

  11. Bonuses aren't wage increases. Stock buy backs are not jobs. 1-2% bracket changes are meaningless. Net Corporate taxes paid were less than 20% historically. Unless you are a family with young children, the rest of changes are a wash, and I'll still be filing a 20 page tax form. Can't hardly hold back my glee!
Seriously, he won't remember what he asks for vs. what he signs. Makes no difference to him, just wants to sign and smile and MAGA!
I don't wish I'll towards 45 or any person, but the signs of an impending mental health issue since he was elected are too numerous and obvious to ignore.

  12. 45 did seem to run a coherent immigration meeting, even knowing the names of those around the table. But he couldn't sustain his interest as 45 seemed to confuse his own policy positions as the discussion progressed.

45 urged lawmakers to codify into law protections for so-called “dreamers” — undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children — and pledged to “take the heat” if Congress pushes even further and reaches a deal on comprehensive immigration reform.

But he responded warmly to California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s suggestion that he support a “clean” bill on DACA — that is, one without any funding for the border wall 45 has promised since the campaign. “I have no problem,” 45 said. “I think a lot of people would like to see that.”

The exchange prompted House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy to interject that 45’s position on DACA includes a demand for wall funding. Later in the meeting, Trump added, “You need the wall.”

  14. “When this group comes back with an agreement … I’m signing it,” he promises. “I will be signing it. I’m not gonna say, ‘Oh, gee, I want this or I want that.’ I’ll be signing it. Because I have a lot of confidence in the people in this room that they’ll be coming back with something really good.”
I think his confidence is mis-placed.

  15. Now THAT I will agree with-- that his confidence in them is misplaced. There are many in that room that, before the meeting at minimum, were doing everything in their power to not only NOT cooperate and NOT do anything to solve the problem, but to strenuously obstruct while questioning his mental health!

In fact, several commentators have suggested that the meeting was only tangentially about immigration, but to show the public how sane and sensible Trump is, and how seriously deranged the Democrats are. And it seems he succeeded.

The basic problem is that Democrats (and media) don't understand Trump. By all accounts, he is a good listener. He likes everybody to have their say, then picks out the best ideas, combines them if necessary, and "signs it." Just like a great CEO. It is confirmed by his comments about "having earmarks again." It wasn't because he wanted that abusive use of funds, but because it produced an atmosphere of comity in Congress that has been lost in the hyper-partisan, hyperventilating, and needlessly non-productive rancor we have now.
