"Meanwhile, we continue to watch CNN or Fox to see the "breaking news" when yet another school is used as target practice. Then will come the usually gun control petitions and suggestions on how to harden our schools. Then when nothing happens, we just wait for the next one, and then the next one, and then the next one."
A week from now, will be the one month anniversary. Anniversary from what, you might ask? From the Parkland School shootings if Florida. Okay, so how are we doing in making our students safer in the time since the shootings? I am listening....tick, tock, tick, tock. You guessed it - nada. Our kids are just as exposed as they were since before Parkland, New Town, or even Columbine.
This morning in the newspaper, was an article about what our Governor wants to do to make our schools safer in Minnesota. Focus on mental health, try and identify kids who have been kicked out of school, and then - hold their hands. Oh yes, then maybe bolster school security - and?
Not to pick on our Governor, but this is the playbook. "Let's get something done. Here are some suggestions." Then there is tons of talk, and - very little action. Meanwhile, the next school shooting is probably already being planned. Really? Like what?
In Ohio for example, a young boy committed suicide in a rest room at Jackson Middle School. A disturbed young man, he had been planning a mass murder attack instead of taking his own life. This was only days after the Parkland shootings. And could this 13 year old kid have pulled this off? In a New York minute. It is only by providence, the body count was only one - his own.
Not to quote a "B" rated movie folks, but here we are, with "Eyes wide shut". Just waiting for the next news maker. Will it happen again? Count on it. Would medal detectors, single point of entry, armed security officers, and teachers who carry make a difference? Maybe not a 100% chance, but close.
To our elected officials. For our kids safely - GET OFF YOUR ASS! Harden these most soft targets now! If not, our seed corn will be slaughtered only due to the cancer that Hollywood and video games have visited upon our young folks.
Meanwhile, we continue to watch CNN or Fox to see the "breaking news" when yet another school is used as target practice. Then will come the usually gun control petitions and suggestions on how to harden our schools. Then when nothing happens, we just wait for the next one, and then the next one, and then the next one.
A 17-year-old female student was fatally shot and another teenager injured in a shooting Wednesday at an Alabama high school, according to the school district.
ReplyDeleteIf the person had a knife or a club, instead of a gun, injuries would have been minor.
Some local schools in prosperous neighborhoods will harden their schools.
Harden the schools and teen killers will be putting poison in the punch at on prom night. That would let the NRA off the hook.
But I wouldn't go to church, a movie or the mall anymore.
Bullets destroy flesh and blood, psychosis does not.
You are also correct, nothing will be done by a Congress beholding to it's NRA donors.
But... but... It is IMPOSSIBLE for these school shootings to occur! It is against the law to have a gun within 1000 feet of a school! It is as if somebody intent on violating the law against murder isn't bothered by laws against using a weapon to do it.
ReplyDeleteAnd unfortunately, most proposals for stopping the violence do NOT involve "hardening the target" but somehow magically determining what rare individual will use the weapon improperly and never mind the disarming of the vast majority of potential victims. The only way to actually stop a crazed (and they all are) school shooter is with a well-placed 9mm round. Quickly.
That may work if the crazed gun toting killer tries to rob a convenience store with the armed owner protecting his livelyhood, but arming a scared shitless schoolteacher or an underpaid security guard, no way.
DeleteI think the best bet is a single entry and exit point to a school. Logistical nightmare for awhile, but they would eventually adjust.
Such a sad commentary on this countries inability to control violent behavior involving a weapon.
You do know that, in the FL shooting, three UNARMED teachers attempted to intervene and were killed?
ReplyDeleteMay I suggest an edit? "Such a sad commentary on this countries inability to control violent behavior." Period. The crazies are out there. If you can't stop them from being crazy, shouldn't you stop them from hurting others?
Turning schools into guarded security zones accomplishes little except for frightening kids unnecessarily and costing a lot of money. Let those in each school comfortable and capable with a firearm be allowed to exercise that right. Once that is known, those crazed shooters will cease attacking those "gun free zones."
I mean, have you noticed that not a single convenience store or liquor store has suffered an armed robbery since those "no guns allowed on these premises" signs went up? Do you know that 100% of all school shootings have taken place in gun-free zones, along with 98% of all mass shootings?
Excellent points!
