Mexico on the brink...

"We have to save Mexico, and do it now. If we end up with a broken Mexico, the flood of immigrants trying to cross the border, will be legion. Mexico will devolve into total chaos. Our border towns will start looking like war zones. No - we have to fix Mexico. And soon." 

If you have not yet heard the news, you will hear it soon. Somewhere between 9 and 12 family members, who had dual citizenship with the United States and Mexico, were gunned down by the cartel yesterday. Adults, young people, infants - all murdered. Why? Some say it was mistaken identity. The head of our Border Patrol says otherwise. "President Trump's crackdown on drug running is starting to really hurt the cartels. This might have been a 'message' killing."

Last year, Mexico recorded just under 30,000 homicides. Let that number sink in for a minute. That is about half the number of war fighters we lost in Viet Nam. But Viet Nam was a war zone - Mexico is not (supposed to be). Experts say many of the 30,000 homicides were due to drugs and the cartels. Many innocent people were killed - and some very guilty. In any event, nobody should have to live in a war zone which is not a war zone. 

What can the United States do to help out this valuable ally? Some thoughts:

• First and foremost, if you are using ANY kind of drug, get clean, and get clean fast. Mexico only supplies drugs across the border because there is a insatiable demand. 
• We need to let Mexico know we are fed up with the corruption the cartels have instilled in their government. The State Department should discourage travel until that is fixed.
• Offer Mexico assistance from our military. Declare war on the cartels. Have our military provide valuable intel to the Mexican government. And air support, if needed.

Mexico is a country rich in heritage and natural resources. The people in Mexico deserve so much better. To let this problem linger, to get worse, serves nobody's interest - except the cartels. These are cold people. To execute innocent people, including babies, is subhuman. 

Not even the exclusive tourist sites are exempt from this cancer. Last year in Cancun, they had a record 540 murders. In Cancun!
