Welcome to Globalism. Or what was once Globalism. Seems in the paper this morning, Globalism might be on the way out. If that is true, good riddance to bad rubbish. In his book Brave New World, Aldous Huxley paints a picture of what the world could look like in the 26th century. No more countries, just a "World State" to live under. And like Globalism, everyone and everything is connected to each other. The name of the game? Consumerism. Lots and lots of consumerism. It was the fodder which fed the beast.
Decades ago, before Japan learned the art of quality from Deming, we bought a lot of cheap junk from Japan. It was the China of the day. When you went in someone's house, it was common to see "made in Japan" labels on many items. Any toy I had as a kid which was made in Japan lasted a very short time before breaking. Everything was like that. Like I said, before Deming taught the Japanese about quality, much of what they made was junk.
Today we have China. They have become the needle in our arms for "stuff". Today, when you go into someone's house, you will see many "made in China" stickers on things. Unlike Japan before Deming, this stuff can be okay in quality. Or it can be counterfeit. Counterfeit? Yes, China is a world class thief on the world stage of trading. To send Level 3 drawings over to China, for the purpose of offshore manufacturing, is to risk your product's future. But who cares? We are still able to get lots and lots of cheap stuff from China.
World trade - globalism - only works if everyone is playing be the same rules and everyone walks away from trade deals "whole". We have been so addicted to the mantra of "ending is better than mending" we did not care if we walked away "whole". Buy it cheap, use it for a while, get rid of it, buy another. We did not care, as everything was cheap. We had become the consumers that Huxley tried to warn the world about in the 1930's. But like I say, we have allowed China's needle to get deep into our arm, so breaking this China habit is very painful right now.
Most right thinking folks in this country are not fans of globalism. Not fans of turning our sovereignty over to a globalist organization like the UN. Not fans of horses**t trade arrangements like we have had with China. Not fans with offshoring a good part of our manufacturing prowess. It does not take a mind reader to figure out what China's game is. We are not in China's future as a "partner". They have been using us, and will continue to do so, as long as we let them.
Not too long ago, when the term Globalization came up, I would think of the EU. No longer. Now I think of China. China wants to become the new "World State". China loves Globalism, so long as it is on their terms. As far as I am concerned, as an American, this trade war with China could not have come at a better time. I am ready to call them on their crap. Their expansionism in the South China Sea, their IP theft, their currency manipulation, "me first" trade deals, and so forth. They don't want to buy our agriculture products? Fine - we will sell them elsewhere - gladly.

This trade war with China is far from over.
