Yesterday was an historic day. After a few Republicans blew up the House a few weeks ago, and work was piling up like driftwood in a storm, the House FINALLY elected Mike Johnson as their Speaker. "Mike who?", many are saying today. Unlike McCarthy, Scalice, Jordon or Emmer, Mike Johnson is not well known outside of the caucus. But inside the caucus, Mike Johnson is known to be a fierce conservative and a hard-core man of faith. How is that type of personality going to get along with the atheists, socialists and misfits on the other side of the aisle? Probably not well at all.
It was almost humorous to hear the same old acceptance speech everyone gives (including, believe it or not - Biden). Mike Johnson intends to govern in a bi-partisan fashion. He wants to form a bi-partisan group to attack the "debt problem". That should be a scream. The Socialist Democrats don't think we have a "debt problem". Our only problem is we don't tax enough. Too many scoundrels on the red team are not "paying their fair share."
The first order of business was to craft a resolution which would recognize and support Israel in this recent war. Oh, oh. We seem to have some on the other side who would rather castigate Israel and support the Palestinian folks. Even something like this, which not too many years ago would have been a no-brainer, might now be a "bridge too far".
What else is up? Biden wants the House to authorize ANOTHER $100B for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. And he wants it pronto. Our CR, which caused this train wreck comes due at the end of November. There is no way on this green plush Earth that all the budgets will be agreed to and signed into law by November 30th. Matt Gaetz and company better just grit their teeth, as this CR is going to be extended.
I think all the nice things the other side could say about Mike Johnson were said by the other side yesterday. What? You did not hear that many nice things said about him? Me neither. He is just another "MAGA extremist". Soon, the other side will look at Mike Johnson as Jack the Ripper - or worse.
Why paint such a bleak picture of our government? Because it is what it is. The Republicans hate the Socialist Democrats for what they have done to our country. The Socialist Democrats hate the Republicans because we are not them. Our hatred for each other, eclipses any hatred we might have for bad guys in the world. As Speaker, to manage this seething group of hate mongers, makes herding cats look like a joy job.
How long will this honeymoon be? Will it be the shortest honeymoon on record? Maybe. Probably. Stay tuned. This could get interesting.
