"For those in the establishment who went against the endorsement process, there are no recriminations coming. There will however, be discussions with the folks in the BPOU who voted for endorsement. We will decide then if we can all be part of the same team, or if we need to change the team."
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. It is game on now! Last night was a very, very good night for the good guys. Actually, even if some don't realize it, last night was a very good night for all of the people of Minnesota. Why? Real change is coming. Last night was the the first tremor in the coming earthquake. And when the earth starts to rumble, the tables of power in Washington and St. Paul are in dire danger of tipping over. Or should I say, either tipping over or being kicked over.
On the bigger tremors which was felt last night was in House District 31B. Cal Bahr, who has never held elected office, beat an entrenched twenty year incumbent. Or should I put it another way? Cal, who had the support of his people in the BPOU, beat someone who became a staunch member of the "establishment". The "good old boy's club". One who protected the sacred power tables in St. Paul.
Cal Bahr on the other hand, is somewhat of an iconoclast. He hates what St. Paul has become. How it is so different from what our state constitution has mandated. In particular, Cal HATES the concept of omnibus bills. How they have become the norm. And each and everyone one of them violates our single subject rule. So yes, the tables in St. Paul are in grave danger.
Before folks like Cal can lace up their steel toed table kicking shoes, we have one more bump in the road to get over. Even though some districts (like 31B) are basically "red" politically, there still is an opposition party. And that party has candidates. So those of us who worked hard for Cal, can now sit back and enjoy the moment. Yes, take a breath and relax. Then tomorrow, it is back to work. The district will be peppered with yellow and black signs. Lit will be dropped. Phone calls will be made. Doors will be knocked on.
I am excited about many of the victories which happened last night. Now it is time for the ones who came up short last night to support the winners. The big game happens in November, and we need all hands on deck. For those in the establishment who went against the endorsement process, there are no recriminations coming. There will however, be discussions with the folks in the BPOU who voted for endorsement. We will decide then if we can all be part of the same team, or if the team needs a change or two.
