"In other words, if the objective of the terrorists has been to change our way of life, to erode our freedoms, they have scored huge points in the past fifteen years."
Our country is going to change again. Not to the extent we had to change after 9/11. That was a massive change (and not for the better). However, soft targets have now been exposed. Especially for gathering spots for a selected group of people. A group which has been targeted by terrorist overseas, and now has been targeted in the homeland.
Every time there is either a successful attack or even a close call, we tend to lose more of our freedoms. Anyone who does not believe that just needs to book a flight and stand in an endless TSA line. Or study the Patriot Act. In other words, if the objective of the terrorists has been to change our way of life, to erode our freedoms, they have scored huge points in the past fifteen years.
I can already see the hand writing on the wall. More pat downs and metal detectors for night time venues. If there is an attack at a restaurant, then more security measures when we just want to get a bite to eat. Truthfully, after the movie theater got shot up in Colorado, I am surprised the security at movie theaters has not changed.
And the great debate has once again heated up in our country. Even though the blood on the floor of the Pulse has not yet been cleaned up. Guns. Some in the country wants to ban all guns. Some want just the "assault types" like the AR-15 banned. Some want high capacity ammo clips banned. There are even some who want to modify our Constitution by getting rid of the Second Amendment. And then there are people like me who want gun free zones banned. They are just an open invitation for bad guys to do bad things.
As the country tries to move on, the debate will go on and changes will continue. We really need to come up with a better mousetrap to ensure more attacks don't happen here. As good as we are at catching most before they happen, it just takes one attack like in Orlando to be another gut punch to the country.
