"In my opinion, this where it all started. This community organizing 'unifier' has become the 'anti-MLK'."
In my most humble of opinions - that is where it all started. Trust me, this was long before the Bill DeBlasio "dissing" of his police forces in New York. No, this started from much higher up. From our Community Organizer in Chief. The guy who is supposed to be the President of ALL of us. As usual, without knowing all the facts, he castigated the police forces. Said they "acted stupidly" in the way they handled the Professor Henry Louis Gates issues. That led to the infamous "beer summit."
In my opinion, this where it all started. Our "unifier" has become instead the "anti-MLK" to the country. And many of the blue communities have also hopped on the President's band wagon. Even here in Minnesota with our own Governor.
This is what has happened. More and more police have become hesitant to police the way they have been trained. They have lost their edge. They now either over police or under police. When they under police, you end up with higher crime rates like we have in the inner city of Chicago. Or many other blue cities. When they over police, you can end up with accidents like what happened in Minneapolis or New Orleans. When police don't know how to act, they can over react. Have an inadvertent shoot. And that can result in tragedies like we had this past week.
My biggest fear is this - our "This Blue Line" will not feel that anyone has their back. Oh, the rank and file (that be us) do - big time. But the blue leadership in many blue cities - not so much. And the President - even less.
People that serve in the police forces are no different than anyone else. They get up in the morning, kiss their spouse and kids goodbye, and go to work. Even though they have sworn a solemn oath to lay down their lives for us if necessary, they expect to come home at night in one piece. WE also expect them to come home in one piece every night.
I have made it a habit a long time ago to thank every police officer I come in contact with. I will now re-double my efforts to do that. We are blessed in our town to be policed by our Sheriff's Department. And our Sheriff's Department is one of the best in the country.
Do I think our police "act stupidly"? Not a bit. I do however, think they are human. And I also believe as a rare exception to the rule, a bad apple might get into the police forces. However, for the most part, almost totally, our police forces are a force for good. They truly do live up to their motto of "to protect and serve".
